Here is the latest update on the new golf course from Bill Franklin, owner and developer of Thousand Acres at Deep Creek Lake.

Play has started on the front nine!

We are allowing limited play on the completed front nine of the Thousand Acres golf course for friends of the project, members of the club, and for marketing purposes. We have had a staggering amount of grass growth this spring and summer.  The tees and greens are in very good condition while the fairways are in good condition…some areas still need growth and fill in.  The course is very playable and we have been getting some very good feedback.

Flags and greens cups are in as are yardage markers.  Our superintendent, Bob Raley, is very pleased with the greens conditions and anticipates lowering the height of cut from .125” to .100” by the end of the season.  The current stimp rating is in the 7 to 8 range.  Bob is targeting a stimp rating of 10 for the course.  We have all the equipment on site for golf course maintenance and there is a regular mowing schedule in place…the greens show excellent striping. We have been paying particular attention to the course tie in along Poland Run on the lower side and the upper woods line on the upper side.  Bob will use different heights of cut in those tie in areas in order to blend in the transition of the course to the surrounding woods. Some of the attached pics show the tie ins.

Four EZGO gas carts are on site at the sales office which is where play begins. Taylor Made has provided us several sets of demo clubs, R9 series…..men’s right and left, women’s, and the flex and regular shaft clubs.

A very popular biannual magazine, Mountain Discoveries, has run a feature story on the Thousand Acres Golf Course.  I have advertised the Thousand Acres lakefront development in Mountain Discoveries since its inception many, many years ago.

Mountain Discoveries has also created a panoramic movie of golf hole #3.  Other golf holes should be posted soon.

The Thousand Acres at Deep Creek Golf website has been revamped with new pictures posted and you can hear our new ad on WTOP radio.  A new rendering of the project, lakefront area, and HOA grounds is posted showing 18 finishing on the pond closer to Deep Creek Lake.

Most of you know that I live on Thousand Acres, as do my mom and dad.  Our family has a very long history with Thousand Acres, and we are not going anywhere; we are staying right here.  I am working everyday, as are many of our longtime employees, to assure that everything that takes place here is done to make this a successful project.

We have opened some new lots along golf hole 7 (Mountain View) and lakefront lots with one slip (South Shore).

The time period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is historically a slow period for the Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County real estate market. Most potential buyers are usually focused on the upcoming holidays and not purchasing a vacation home. However, the past few weeks has seen the following higher priced properties go under contract.

1038 South Blakeslee Drive - listed for $1,149,000. 5 bedroom lakefront house located in the Blakeslee subdivision on the southern end of the lake. Boat slip is located adjacent to and in front of this property.

1088 Thousand Acres Road - listed for $875,000. 3 bedroom lakefront log home with a private Type A boat dock.

86 Moorings Way - listed for $665,000. This house is a custom 3 bedroom lake access house built in 2004 with wonderful views of the southern end of the lake. Plus, the deeded boat slip is within walking distance of the house - which is located in the neighborhood known as Hickory Ridge.

Will this level of dollar volume continue into the New Year? No one knows for sure but it is a positive sign. This market has certainly experienced a drop in activity over the past few years - no one will argue that - but the important thing is that real estate values have held their ground (no pun intended) around Deep Creek Lake during this national economic slowdown. Once again our lakefront and lake access markets continue to show their strength when other areas are experiencing significant decreases in values.

Bill Franklin, owner/developer, of the Thousand Acres at Deep Creek Lake real estate development and new golf course community provided us with another update on how the project is progressing thus far. Here is a synopsis of some of his comments he provided;

The front nine has been finished and several of the greens and fairways have been mowed several times now.  The practice range is near completion but it will probably be next spring before any good grass growth occurs there.  The cart paths have been installed with a base layer of stone and we have a golf cart on site for anyone who would like to take a tour. HOA members will have access to the HOA grounds along the lake with a swimming area, walking paths, and hand launching of small boats (canoes, kayaks, etc). The colors this fall were very nice and we had some great weather to go along with the colors.

Recently, Bill Franklin, developer of the Thousand Acres at Deep Creek Lake community, sent us an update on the progress of the newest planned golf course in Garrett County and real estate subdivision.

• The front nine holes will be completed in fall 2008 and are scheduled to open in the spring of 2009. The back nine holes are scheduled to open later in 2009.
• Holes 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9 have been sodded around the greens, bunkers, and tees.
• Bill also reports they have been very careful not to impact any of the wetland areas - there are 8 small bridges that cross streams and wetlands. The only disturbance of those wetlands is those bridge posts.
• Fairway and rough seeding is ongoing along with clearing and grubbing, moving dirt, installing golf course drainage and irrigation, building roads and storm water structures, building the irrigation pond, and all the other stuff that goes into building a golf course
