Yes, of course there are cost associated with any second home purchase such as:  mortgage, taxes, insurance, phone, electric and all the normal household expenses.  But, by putting the home in the rental program you are able to block off the dates that you and your family wish to use the property and then have the added benefit of rental income to help offset the expenses.  Most second home owners only actually use their home about 20-40 days per year so it is a way to use the benefits of rental income with your second home.
