The Wisp will be open the entire ski season so you won't have any risk in them closing. Filing for Chapter 11 means the real estate developers, not the Wisp, are attempting to restructure their existing bank debt. The ski operations and slopes are financially sound. The lack of lot sales around the new Hale Irwin Lodestone Golf course is what ultimately forced the developers to file for Chapter 11. Like you said, Wisp is still and will be a great place to ski for years to come.

The developers got greedy. Plain and simple. The area is nice, but how many McMansions can it support. I hope DC Development goes out of business, real estate prices correct themselves, and somebody buys Wisp Ski Resort who is less greedy and wants to run it for an honest profit. Sad to see what money grubbing developers have done to what was a great place to ski. Now that they filed Chapter 11, I'm certainly reconsidering taking my winter rental elsewhere. Too much risk that the skiing won't open or will close mid season.

Boo hoo! Rich property owners can not blame boaters for this. I for one travel from Ohio to paddle this river. If this passes I will not return with my economic contribution to the area. These wealthy homeowners are not shy about pushing their interests at the expense of others. Blaming paddlers for their problems, they asked the Maryland Department of the Environment (via the Deep Creek Lake Policy and Review Board) to raise the lower rule band. This is the minimum level that Deep Creek Lake can be lowered to support releases. Since the fish enhancement releases can't be reduced, this change would cut the summer whitewater release program by 60% and eliminate most Saturday events. Guess what? Their property values will rot and their local economy will suffer.

The new regulation make no sense. If you own a PWC, you know you can not tie it to a dock without damage or the risk of it being swamped.

Ramps keep the PWC of of the water, protecting both the PWC and the environment.

Joanne - under current regulations you can beach a PWC on the shore provided it is under 500 lbs - or if you had previously obtained a permit for this from DNR. Any vessel over 500 lbs without a special permit is not allowed to be beached. Beaching PWCs hasn't really been an issue until the last 10 years or so when most PWCs started getting much larger in size and started weighing over 500 lbs. Before then, property owners would keep their canoes, kayaks, and jet skis (all vessels under 500 lbs) beached on the shoreline. Until DNR finalizes and adopts this new regulation you'll need to keep your PWC tied up to your dock (not beached) and it would count as one of your two allowed power vessels assuming you have a normal Type A boat dock permit. Hope this helps.

I am trying to find out if there is a restriction on beaching PWC's on the shore. According to your article, there has not been anything concrete in writing yet. Is this correct? We never saw anything about having to have a permit, and now the DNR says that we had to apply for this permit three years ago, and can no longer obtain one.
     Thank you for your article.

That's a shame. I wonder if they'll allow the new kind of PWC floating docks. They don't damage the marina structure.
